Jesus clearly tells us not to worry about tomorrow (future), today (present) has enough trouble of its own.ĭwelling on the past ( more on that here) is another area our minds can settle. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” ~Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. That is exactly what my brain does when my mental checklist has gone off track. Do you remember the GPS navigation devices in your car before we used our phones? Once you take a wrong turn it says “re-calibrating”. Which timeframe does your mind settle on? Thinking about the past, present or future. Me, too! Nobody ever looks back and says I’m glad I spent so much time being productive. When I start to get side tracked from my goal to live in the moment, I’m trading joy for productivity and efficiency. In order to live in the moment, I have to put 4 simple behaviors into practice… I promise myself… next week will be different, but it isn’t. I grow impatient and snappy with the people I love. Usually, I continue this neck breaking pace until my joy slips out the back door without me noticing. Thinking proudly, look how much I’ve done today as if it somehow increases my value. I wear my productivity like a badge of honor.

So I do the next logical thing ( or so I think) and set the alarm earlier, stay up later and double up tasks. Instead of living in the moment, I’m barely surviving. Before I know it the calendar is overloaded and I am overwhelmed. Whether it’s at school, sports or church functions, I see the gaps and barrel forward to pitch in. In fact, I have a propensity to race around like a chicken with my head cut off. Actually choosing to live in the moment is much harder.
